Crumbled feed Pellet feed Mash feed Some first time  or inexperienced poultry farmers who don't wish to ask questions about which feed is or are for which type of poultry always face feed mix up challenge. Layers are poultry reared mainly for egg production either at commercial level or personal use. Now let's help you know your layers feed and when they are needed by your birds 1. CHICK STARTER MASH/CRUMBLED This is a high protein rich variety of chicken feed designed to meet the dietary requirements of baby chicks. Basically, baby chicks can live comfortably on a diet of starter feed and water for the first           6-7weeks of their life before progressing onto the next variety of feed. The crude protein content is usually between 20-24% and it helps young chicks grow into playful pullets, however it’s imperative that you phase out the starter feed once they are 6 or 7weeks old, otherwise the excess protein can cause liver damage. 2. A strong dehydration is observed. The skin is sticked on or adhered to body musculature and is hardly removed Necrotic enteritis  infection is susceptible to pennicilin. It usually affect birds between 2wks to 6wks of age.  Symptoms Symptoms are similar to gumboro and pullorium. On PM, there's bloody lesion on the intestines linings. It is not an hatchery problem. It is transmitted via shavings, equipment and by workers. It can be endermic on a farm, if proper fumigation is not carried out after an outbreak.

FEEDING PIGS WITH POULTRY MANURE

Poultry litter mixed with feeds Collecting poultry litter to feed pigs Feed wastage in poultry house As human population grows and the cost of feed rises, farmers will always look for ways to reduce feed costs and the use of poultry litter is an effective way of reducing production cost in animal production particularly swine production. Poultry litter is a mixture of droppings, feathers, bedding material, feeds and water in the chicken house before or after cleaning. Poultry litter is profitable for use either as manure or animal feed since it maximises total nutrient input. Poultry litter is an economical and safe source of protein, minerals, and energy for pig When chickens are raised in deep litter  houses, a layer of material  is used to cover the ground to give the birds a suitable surface. Types of bedding materials to use in poultry houses if it's to be fed to pigs. Basically, there are two types of bedding materials to use in poultry house if

MARKETING OF BROILERS: EASY WAYS TO MAKE PROFIT FROM SELLING BROILERS

Our broilers ready for market Taking the weight Marketing of broiler products has been and still one of the serious challenge facing every broiler producers. Farmers invest a lot to rear these birds and at the end, sometimes sale below cost to either middle men or to consumers. Simple ways to market your broilers and make profit Broiler marketing can be very simple but requires a reasonable effort to achieve. As a farmer chose which marketing strategy best suits your location. i.  Marketing at 3weeks or 4weeks Due to the stress involved in brooding broilers, most farmers prefer stocking their farms with 3weeks or 4weeks old birds. As a farmer who intend making profit, target these farmers who prefer brooded birds and sell to them. In the areas I'm familiar with, this type of marketing yields more profit in broiler production maybe because the birds consumption rate is still low. ii. Marketing when the birds are matured This is the most common. At this point th

SOME SHEEP AND GOAT DISEASES

Damp litter exposes animals to disease 1.  Anthrax disease  of ruminants : Anthrax, a highly infectious and fatal disease of cattles, is caused by a relatively large spore-forming rectangular shaped bacterium called  Bacillus anthracis . Anthrax occurs on all the continents, causes acute mortality in ruminants. The bacteria produce extremely potent toxins which are responsible for the ill effects, causing a high mortality rate. The bacteria produce spores on contact with oxygen.  Signs of the illness usually appear 3 to 7 days after the spores are swallowed or inhaled. Once signs begin in animals, they usually die within two days. Hoofed animals, such as deer, cattle, goats, and sheep, are the main animals affected by this disease. They usually get the disease by swallowing anthrax spores while grazing on pasture contaminated (made impure) with anthrax spores. Inhaling (breathing in) the spores, which are odorless, colorless, and tasteless, may also caus

GROWTH IN ANIMAL PRODUCTION

Pregnant sheep Pregnant cow Pregnant pig Animals grow in stages . 1. PRENATAL GROWTH Stages of prenatal growth i.  Blastocist stage During this stage, the dividing zygote will yield millions of cells which are enclosed within the  zonapellucidal  and this is called blastocist. Blastocist is a ball of many cells enclosed by a membrane called zonapellucidal. During this stage, the Blastocist feeds from the uterus by means of diffusion. In the Ewe for instance, one to three or four lambs are normally produced but up to ten eggs maybe fertilized during fertilization or during mating particularly when when females are super ovulated. The Blastocist stage following fertilization will last for about  10days in sheep and pigs and 11days in cattle . ii.  Embryonic stage This is the second stage in prenatal growth. Cell differentiation into tissues and organs are beginning to show or manifest. These differentiating cells have a very high priority for nutrients. The size of

WHY SET UP A CRICKET FARM?

Why Would You Raise Crickets? You might be wondering why you would even raise crickets to begin with. There are actually lots of reasons to raise crickets. They are: 1. For Yourself If you can get past the idea of eating a cricket, you might be surprised to learn just how good they actually are for your health. Crickets contain a ton of protein without a lot of fat or calories. Actually, they contain more protein per bite (per density) than beef or chicken can provide per bite. For example, in a 100-gram cricket there is 16-21 grams of protein. Also, there is only 5 grams of fat and 121 calories per 100 grams of crickets. Beef can contain up to 300 calories per 100 grams. Not to mention, the fat that crickets have is actually the good kind that will not raise your cholesterol. So if you are becoming more health conscious and would like a healthier protein option, then you might want to seriously consider adding crickets to your diet. 2. For Your Birds As much p

POULTRY HEALTH MANAGEMENT

Active healthy birds Sick broiler bird Sick pullet Effective health management is an important aspect of poultry production. The best fed and housed stock with the best genetic potential will not grow and produce efficiently if they become diseased or infested with parasites. . Infectious disease causing organisms will spread  very quickly through a flock because of the usual high stocking densities of commercially housed poultry.  effective poultry health management primarily aims at: 1. Preventing the onset of disease or parasites. 2. Recognising at an early stage the presence of disease or parasites, and 3.Treating all flocks that are diseased or infested with parasites as soon as possible and before they develop into a serious condition or spread to other flocks. To be able to do this it is imperative to know how to identify that; i.The birds are diseased, ii. The action required for preventing or minimising disease and iii. How to monitor for signs
