As human population grows and the cost of feed rises, farmers will always look for ways to reduce feed costs and the use of poultry litter is an effective way of reducing production cost in animal production particularly swine production.

Poultry litter is a mixture of droppings, feathers, bedding material, feeds and water in the chicken house before or after cleaning.
Poultry litter is profitable for use either as manure or animal feed since it maximises total nutrient input.

When chickens are raised in deep litter houses, a layer of material is used to cover the ground to give the birds a suitable surface.

Types of bedding materials to use in poultry houses if it's to be fed to pigs.

Basically, there are two types of bedding materials to use in poultry house if the litter is to be fed to pigs:

i. Rice bran
This is gotten from rice processing plants.
It is very cheap (N200/100kg bag)
It mixes well with the droppings and absorbs moisture rapidly keeping the poultry house dried.

ii. Spent grain/brewer's waste
This can be gotten from breweries.
Though more expensive (N1800/100kg bag) than spent grain.
It's the combination of different brewing materials. It can by itself alone be fed to pigs, so allowing it mix with droppings increases its nutrient content.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BROILERS AND LAYERS-POULTRY

Layer bird Broiler bird i. Broilers are reared mainly for meat. Layers are reared solely for their eggs ii. Broilers are reared for a span of 42–56days and are then marketed as live animals or slaughtered for meat. Layers attain sexual maturity 18–22 weeks and lay eggs up to 72 weeks of age and then they are either moulted or sold as spent hens. iii. Broilers are reared commercially in deep litter system of housing, whereas it is preferred to rear layers in caged housing systems. iv. Ideally, broilers are reared in batches in an all-in/all-out system in a single rearing shed.
